Tower Crane
3D printing a dream toy
problem
How can I create a toy I have always wanted?
approach
From a young age, I had always wanted to get a tower crane toy, but they are very expensive and complicated. When I got a 3D printer, I decided that creating my dream toy would be one of my first projects. I set out designing a crane that would have a small number of parts and would not only function well in play, but would 3D print without any failures. After many hours of iterating on the design, I had a final version of the crane.
solution
I created a modular 7 piece design of a tower crane that can be expanded when needed.
Failed tower crane print from earlier iteration.
key takeaways
- Modularity is key
- The smaller the part, the more easily it breaks
- Use test prints for checking connections
